Bow Bells

Café Below is located beneath the Norman crypt of Sir Christopher Wren's renowned St Mary-le-Bow church, in the heart of the City of London, home to the famous Bow Bells.

The parish church of St Mary-le-Bow has been here since at least 1080 and was, until the mid-nineteenth century, the Archbishop of Canterbury’s personal church in the City of London.

The church's tower houses the most famous ring of bells in the world: the successors of the curfew bell which called Dick Whittington back to become Lord Mayor, and whose sound rings in the ears of every true cockney. But the City has changed since Whittington’s day, and the traders in Cheapside are no longer selling bread and poultry.

These days, the church provides for its parish – corporate lawyers and fund managers, shop assistants and office cleaners – by offering hospitality and room for conversation. Its doors are open all day so that people can relax in peace. The programme of worship, debates, concerts and all sorts of other events, includes something for everyone.
